Sloping roof planting

Sloping roof plantings require specific planting systems. The stability of the vegetaton layer must be ensured, and to compensate for the surface run-off and greater drying out in comparison with a flat roof, the water retention should be increased.

The water storage panel, directly filled with substrate enable both these criteria to be easily satisfied for a roof slope of up to 15°. If the roof slope is greater than 15°, additional measures will be required. An extra wooden lattice frame will help during installation and as temporary protection against the substrate slipping off.

The aim should be to get the vegetation to cover the surface quickly, e.g. by using a larger number of low-growing perennials, or by extra watering during the initial growth phase. Ongoing maintenance is especially important with sloping roof plantings.

In the case of gable roofs with north and south aspects, the rate of vegetation growth may differ markedly because of the differening conditions.
