Vegetation on the roof

Sedum and herbs are the most important types making up the rooftop vegetation. Different growth heights, flower colours and flowering periods make for interesting visual variety. The main attribute of the sedums is their ground-covering prowess, but because they are low-growing they are not so visually striking.

Factors such as amount and distribution of rainfall, substrate depth and roof aspect have an important influence on the vegetation, so the actual combination of plant species on a roof may differ greatly from building to building. Even after the initial two-year period of establishment, the vegetation can still continue to change or develop. This type of dynamic in the vegetation is exactly what is wanted. Self-seeding species can even further enrich an extensive planting. Only weeds that would have a critical effect on the layer system or on the functionality of the roof waterproofing membrane must be removed.

Worth knowing ...

What is sedum?

Sedum species are annual or perennial herbaceous plants, or more rarely sub-shrubs, that are more or less succulent (i.e. fleshy plants, adapted to particular climatic and soil conditions).

Their thick fleshy leaves are especially good at storing water. This makes them especially resilient and versatile, enabling them to survive in dry soils and through a hot dry season - ideal for green roofs ...
